How innovation improves producer organisations

As a result of an inspiring writeshop in November 2011, several Agri-ProFocus member organisations cooperated to publish a booklet about the experiences of farmers and cooperatives in the Great Lakes Region of Africa. (Rwanda, Burundi and the Kivu provinces of DR Congo). The booklet specifically focuses on how producer organisations innovated and better positioned themselves in agricultural value chains to benefit the livelihoods of their members.

Smallholder farmers’ unions key to improving lives

Smallholder farmers’ cooperatives own assets worth USD 2.7 billion in Kenya and account for more than 60% of the Mauritius national food production. Now, according to the the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP), smallholder farmers’ unions are a key component to improving the lives of millions of rural farmers across the world.
