Smallholder farmers’ unions key to improving lives

Smallholder farmers’ cooperatives own assets worth USD 2.7 billion in Kenya and account for more than 60% of the Mauritius national food production. Now, according to the the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP), smallholder farmers’ unions are a key component to improving the lives of millions of rural farmers across the world.

Indian women use science to start agribusinesses

Access to science and technology is challenging in rural areas. But in Andhra Pradesh in India, the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) has been teaching women how to use science to shift from subsistence farming to successful agri-businesses - lifting themselves and their communities out of poverty. Making value chain work for men and women! Read the report

On October 4th 2010, 33 representatives of member organisations linked to the Agri ProFocus Uganda network reflected on Gender in Value Chain experiences in Uganda and how to set a joint learning agenda within the network. Through the inspiring examples of Gender 4 Growth (aBi Trust), Nucafe and Weman project the different types of participants (private sector, non-private service providers, knowledge institutes/consultants and donors) came up with areas where they could make a difference.
